In diesen Tagen begeht der Hersteller hochwertiger mechanischer Uhren, SINN Spezialuhren zu Frankfurt am Main, das 20. Jubiläum seiner Führung durch Diplom-Ingenieur Lothar Schmidt.
Als der Pilot und Blindfluglehrer Helmut Sinn die 1961 gegründete Helmut SINN GmbH am 1. September 1994 aus Altersgründen an den Diplom-Ingenieur Lothar Schmidt verkauft, beginnt für das Unternehmen eine neue Zeitrechnung. Das Unternehmen, geprägt von den Prinzipien des Gründers die denkbar besten Uhren zum machbar günstigsten Preis anzubieten und hierbei die Funktionalität klar in den Vordergrund zu stellen, avancierte zum Geheimtipp.
Zum Zeitpunkt der Übernahme steht das Unternehmen jedoch auch an einem Scheideweg: Die Marke SINN ist technisch ausgerichtet und konzentriert sich hauptsächlich auf Fliegerchronographen und Navigationsborduhren, die in der Schweiz hergestellt und als Eigenmarke vertrieben werden.

Lothar Schmidt findet so eine gute Basis vor, um eigene Ideen umzusetzen – allerdings ist das Unternehmen 1994 noch erheblich kleiner. Im Firmensitz „Im Füldchen“ sind zu dieser Zeit gerade anderthalb Stockwerke belegt und drei Uhrmacher im Service beschäftigt.
Bereits während seiner Tätigkeit bei der IWC im schweizerischen Schaffhausen erwirbt der Maschinenbauingenieur Lothar Schmidt umfangreiche Erfahrungen in der Uhrentechnik. In den Jahren 1990 bis 1993 leitet er zusätzlich als Hauptverantwortlicher den produktionstechnischen und logistischen Aufbau der neu- bzw. wiedergegründeten A. Lange und Söhne GmbH, damals ein Tochterunternehmen der IWC.
Während Lothar Schmidt die Übernahme vorbereitet, ist er bereits im Jahr 1993 als Freier Mitarbeiter in der Helmut Sinn GmbH tätig. Die Entscheidung, Sinn Spezialuhren zu übernehmen, ist daher wohlüberlegt: Lothar Schmidt erkennt das Potential des Unternehmens und investiert in seine zukunftsfähige Aufstellung. Er erweitert die Modellpalette und setzt neue Akzente, indem er durch neue, teils patentierte Technologien die Robustheit und Alltagstauglichkeit der Uhren erhöht und verbessert. Schon mit dem ersten Modell setzt er ein Thema um, das bis heute einen großen Stellenwert besitzt, den Magnetfeldschutz. Das Modell 244 aus Reintitan mit Magnetfeldschutz und frei schwingend aufgehängtem Uhrwerk, legt den Grundstein für die hohen Qualitätsansprüche, für die SINN-Uhren heute weltweit geschätzt werden. Funktionalität, Robustheit und Alltagstauglichkeit stehen seitdem im Zentrum der Forschungs- und Entwicklungsarbeit. Daraus leiten sich inzwischen zahlreiche Patente und technologische Entwicklungen, wie zum Beispiel DIAPAL, Ar-Trockenhaltetechnik, HYDRO, TEGIMENT und die Temperaturresistenztechnologie ab.

Das Unternehmen Sinn Spezialuhren hat sich nicht nur technologisch stark weiterentwickelt, sondern beweist heute auch personell Größe: 100 Mitarbeiter allein am Standort Frankfurt am Main beweisen tagtäglich ihr Fingerspitzengefühl und ihre Kompetenz für die Entwicklung und Herstellung robuster, langlebiger und präziser Zeitmesser. Gemeinsam mit Geschäftsführer Lothar Schmidt sind so die Segel für eine erfolgreiche Zukunft gesetzt – getreu seines Mottos: „Die meisten Entwicklungen liegen noch vor uns.“.
Zum Unternehmen
Der Name Sinn Spezialuhren steht für funktionsstarke, mechanische Zeitmesser, die nicht nur Piloten, Taucher und die maritime Einheit der GSG 9 überzeugen. Vor allem wegen der Technologien wie zum Beispiel DIAPAL, Ar-Trockenhaltetechnik, HYDRO, TEGIMENT und Magnetfeldschutz beweisen SINN-Uhren sowohl in alltäglichen als auch in Extremsituationen immer wieder ihre Robustheit und Langlebigkeit, Qualität und Präzision. Im Entwicklungsprozess richtet sich bei Sinn Spezialuhren die Formgebung der Uhren konsequent nach der geforderten Funktionalität.
Ausgewählte Fliegeruhren werden durch die Fachhochschule Aachen nach dem TESTAF
(Technischer Standard Fliegeruhren) überprüft und zertifiziert.
Der TESTAF, entwickelt auf Initiative von Sinn Spezialuhren, stellt sicher, dass eine Fliegeruhr alle Anforderungen an die Zeitmessung beim Flugbetrieb nach Sicht- und/oder Instrumentenflugregeln erfüllt und sie für den professionellen Einsatz im höchsten Maße qualifiziert ist.

SINN Spezialuhren: 20 years of technological progress under Lothar Schmidt
SINN Spezialuhren of Frankfurt am Main, manufacturer of high-quality mechanical watches, is currently celebrating the 20th anniversary of chartered engineer Lothar Schmidt’s leadership of the company.
When the pilot and blind-flying instructor Helmut Sinn, who founded Helmut SINN GmbH in 1961, sold the business to Lothar Schmidt on 1 September 1994 for age reasons, a new era began for the company. From this point on, still shaped by the founder’s philosophy of offering the best-possible watches at the lowest-possible prices while maintaining a clear focus on functionality, the company evolved to become the in thing among those in the know.
At the time of the handover, the company stood at a crossroads: the SINN brand was technical in orientation, concentrating mainly on pilot chronographs and cockpit clocks which were manufactured in Switzerland and sold under the SINN brand name.
Lothar Schmidt thus enjoyed good foundations on which to develop his own ideas. However, the company was still a good deal smaller back in 1994. In those days, the company occupied just one and a half floors of its headquarters on the Frankfurt street of Im Füldchen, and employed a grand total of three watchmakers in the service department.
A mechanical engineer by training, Lothar Schmidt had already gained extensive experience in watch technology during his time working for the Swiss firm IWC Schaffhausen. From 1990 to 1993 he was also in charge of rebuilding the production technology and logistics for the resurgent A. Lange and Söhne GmbH, at the time a subsidiary of IWC.
While Lothar Schmidt was preparing for the takeover, he had already become a freelancer for Helmut Sinn GmbH in 1993. Plenty of thought had been put into the decision to take over the running of Sinn Spezialuhren: Lothar Schmidt had realised the company’s potential and invested in putting it on a sound footing for the future. He expanded the range of models and set new standards through the introduction of new, partly patented technologies which increased the durability of the watches and their suitability for everyday use. And with his very first model he introduced a theme which continues to resonate to the present day: magnetic field protection. The solid titanium model 244, featuring both magnetic field protection and a freely oscillating suspended movement, laid the cornerstone for the high quality standards for which SINN watches are renowned today all round the world. Ever since then, functionality, durability and suitability for everyday use have stood at the heart of our research and development work. A great many patents and technological developments have emerged from these research efforts, for instance DIAPAL, Ar-Dehumidifying Technology, HYDRO, TEGIMENT and Temperature Resistance Technology.
Sinn Spezialuhren has not only made huge strides as a company in technological terms, it has also greatly expanded its workforce. At the Frankfurt am Main headquarters alone, over 100 people demonstrate their great skill and expertise each day in the development and production of robust, durable and precise timepieces. Together with Managing Director Lothar Schmidt, the course has thus been set for a successful future – true to his motto: “Most of our development work still lies ahead of us.”
About the company
The name Sinn Spezialuhren is synonymous with durable, reliably functioning mechanical timepieces which pilots, divers and the GSG 9 specialist German maritime unit swear by, as do many others besides. Thanks above all to technologies such as DIAPAL, Ar-Dehumidifying Technology, HYDRO, TEGIMENT and magnetic field protection, SINN watches prove their durability, robustness, quality and precision time and again, both during everyday use and in extreme situations. Throughout the development process, Sinn Spezialuhren orients the styling of the watches rigorously to the required functionality. Selected pilot watches are inspected and certified by Aachen University of Applied Sciences in accordance with TESTAF, the technical standard for pilot watches. TESTAF, which was developed at the instigation of Sinn Spezialuhren, ensures that pilot watches satisfy all requirements for timekeeping during flight operations under both visual and instrument flying rules and that they are eminently suitable for professional use.
